Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
Six men were convicted by the special POCSO court in Krishnanagar for the 2014 gangrape of a minor girl. The court sentenced each of the accused to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment. In addition to the prison sentence, the court imposed a ₹50,000 fine on each of the convicted individuals. If any of the accused fails to pay the fine, they will face an additional six months of imprisonment.
The incident took place on July 30, 2014, when the victim, who was asleep with her aunt, woke up at around 12:30 a.m. and stepped outside the house. According to police sources, at this time, several neighbours abducted the minor and took her to a nearby abandoned house, where she was forcibly raped. The survivor fell ill three days later and revealed the details of the incident to her family. A complaint was subsequently filed, and the police arrested all six accused based on the victim’s statement and the family’s allegations.
The Krishnanagar POCSO Court reviewed all the evidence presented, including witness testimonies, medical reports, and the survivor's statement. On Wednesday, the court declared all six accused guilty, and the sentencing was announced the following day. Public prosecutor Raja Dubey confirmed that the charges of abduction and rape were proven against the accused, leading to their conviction. The trial and sentencing mark a significant step in this long-pending case.
